Chartered and Registered Counselling Psychologist
Ruth has over 20 years’ experience as a counselling psychologist in senior positions in NHS psychological therapies and higher education. She has worked in the military psychological service, Cambridge colleges and a digital therapy service. She is an accredited cognitive behaviour therapist, and practices Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing therapy, EMDR – a specialist therapeutic method for working with post-traumatic stress and anxiety problems that include upsetting memories. She is also trained in person-centred counselling and in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and integrates knowledge and skills from these therapeutic approaches into her practice.
Ruth’s qualifications are in mental health nursing, a psychology degree (Lancaster), post graduate qualifications in counselling psychology (Surrey) and CBT (Reading). She is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Ruth takes a collaborative and appreciative approach with individuals, drawing on new research findings in trauma, attachment, positive psychology and compassion, working with the strengths and resources available to both client and therapist. Feedback from clients, trainees and supervisees supports that she has a high level of skill in establishing effective interpersonal relationships that are the bedrock of practice in evidence based psychological therapies.
Very experienced in helping adults with mood problems including depression and emotion regulation difficulties, and disordered eating, Ruth can also help with anxiety problems such as phobic avoidance, post-traumatic stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, health anxiety, and social anxiety.
Ruth has experience of providing individual and group clinical supervision to experienced and trainee CBT psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, and mental health nurses.
Ruth has a strong interest in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes and is undertaking research in this area in the next academic year. She has a master’s in creative writing from the University of Cambridge.
